It’s been a while since I last wrote on this blog. If you’ve been following my little corner of the internet, you may have noticed that I’ve been rather quiet lately. There have been times when I’ve wanted to sit down and write, to put my thoughts into words and share a little of what has been happening in my life. But somehow, the words haven’t always come, and I’ve realised that sometimes, we need to give ourselves permission to be quiet.
Life doesn’t always unfold the way we expect it to. We go about our days, making plans and imagining what lies ahead, believing that tomorrow will be much like today. Then something happens that changes our world, and suddenly, the things we once took for granted can feel very different. Our priorities shift, our thoughts turn inward, and we find ourselves needing time to make sense of everything.
Over the past few months, I’ve experienced a significant change in my own life. Losing someone who has been part of your story for so many years can leave you with so much to process, so many memories to revisit, and feelings that are not always easy to put into words. I’ve needed time to take things in, to be there for my family, and simply to find my way through each day without putting pressure on myself to know what comes next.
When We Need Time to Find Our Footing
One thing I’ve come to realise is that when something significant happens in our lives, we don’t always know how to respond straight away. Sometimes, we’re so busy dealing with what is in front of us that we don’t have the time or space to stop and think about how we’re actually feeling. We do what needs to be done, take care of the people we love, and try to keep going, even when a part of us is still trying to catch up with everything that has happened.
I think we often underestimate how much energy it takes to navigate a major change in our lives. Even the simplest things can feel different when our world has shifted. The routines that once felt familiar may no longer bring us the same comfort, and things we previously looked forward to might not hold our attention in quite the same way. We may find ourselves questioning things we never thought to question before, or simply wanting a little more time to ourselves.
I’ve learned that there is no need to rush this process. We don’t have to have everything figured out, and we don’t need to know what the next chapter of our lives will look like before we’re ready to turn the page. Sometimes, we just need to take each day as it comes and allow ourselves the space to adjust.
Perhaps this is what being quiet really means. It isn’t necessarily about withdrawing from the world or giving up on the things we love. It can simply mean turning down the noise for a while, listening to ourselves, and recognising that we are allowed to take things at our own pace.
Finding Comfort in the Ordinary
One of the things I’ve noticed is that life doesn’t stop when we’re going through a difficult time. The days continue to come and go, work still needs our attention, and there are people we love who need us in different ways. We still have meals to prepare, things to organise, and responsibilities to take care of. Even when our minds are somewhere else, life gently reminds us that we are still here, living one day at a time.
For a while, it can be difficult to find the same enjoyment in the things we used to do. Our thoughts may wander, our energy may come and go, and we might not feel quite like ourselves. I’ve come to understand that this is part of being human. We cannot always expect ourselves to carry on as though nothing has changed, especially when something has affected us so deeply.
Perhaps what we need during these times isn’t a grand plan to put everything right, but the freedom to appreciate the little things again, whenever we’re ready. A quiet morning with a cup of tea, a little time in the garden, a conversation with someone we care about, or simply sitting peacefully without feeling that we should be doing something else. These moments might seem insignificant, but they can offer us a sense of familiarity when so much else feels different.
I’m learning that finding our way forward doesn’t always involve making big decisions or taking dramatic steps towards a new beginning. Sometimes, it starts with allowing ourselves to enjoy an ordinary day, even if that day looks a little different from the ones that came before.
When Our Perspective on Life Begins to Change
I think that when we experience a significant change in our lives, we sometimes begin to see things differently. The things that once occupied our minds may no longer seem quite so important, while other things, perhaps things we overlooked before, begin to matter a little more. We may start to think about how we spend our time, the people we surround ourselves with, and what we genuinely want from the years ahead.
For me, this period has been a reminder that life is precious, but it is also unpredictable. We can make plans and imagine how our future will unfold, yet there are things we cannot control or prepare ourselves for. Sometimes, we have to let go of the picture we once held in our mind and find a way to live with the reality in front of us.
I don’t think these changes in perspective happen overnight. We might have moments when we feel clear about what we want, followed by days when everything feels uncertain again. We can feel ready to embrace something new and still find ourselves looking back at what we’ve lost. Perhaps both feelings can exist together. We can miss what was, appreciate what remains, and still be curious about what life might hold for us.
I’m beginning to understand that moving forward doesn’t mean we have to leave everything behind. Our experiences become part of our story, shaping the people we are and the way we see the world. We can carry our memories with us while allowing ourselves to grow, discover new interests, and make room for different experiences.
Maybe that’s one of the things life teaches us as we get older: we don’t have to have everything planned out. Sometimes, it’s enough to remain open to the possibility that life still has things for us to discover, even when the path ahead looks different from the one we imagined.
Finding My Way Back to Writing
Perhaps this is why I’ve felt ready to return to writing. Not because I suddenly have all the answers, or because everything has fallen back into place, but because I’m beginning to feel that there is room in my life to share my thoughts again.
Writing has always given me a way to reflect on my experiences, explore my feelings, and make sense of the things that matter to me. Sometimes, putting our thoughts into words helps us understand them a little better. At other times, writing simply allows us to express something that has been sitting quietly inside us, waiting for a place to be heard.
I don’t know exactly what my writing will look like from here. I know there will still be personal reflections, and there may be moments when I want to write about Paul, the memories we shared, and the ways his loss has changed my life. But I also want to make room for other parts of myself, too: the things I enjoy, the experiences I want to explore, the little discoveries that make an ordinary day feel special, and the thoughts that come to me as I navigate this next chapter.
I don’t want this blog to become a place where I feel I must always have something profound to say. Sometimes, I might simply want to share a thought, a small experience, or something I’ve been reflecting on over a cup of tea or coffee. Other times, I may have something deeper on my mind. I’d like to allow my writing to develop naturally, just as I allow myself the time and space to discover what comes next in my own life.
For now, returning to this space feels like a small but meaningful step. I don’t need to know exactly where it will lead. I’m simply glad to be here again, ready to begin writing when I have something I want to share.
Sometimes, We Just Need to Be Quiet
Looking back, I think I’ve come to appreciate that we don’t always need to fill every silence or have something to say about everything we experience. There are times when life asks us to slow down, step back, and simply be where we are. We might not understand everything that is happening, and we might not be ready to share our thoughts with the world. And that’s okay.
We live in a world where there always seems to be something demanding our attention. We’re encouraged to keep moving, keep achieving, keep making plans, and keep looking towards what’s next. But perhaps we sometimes forget that we are human beings, not machines. We have feelings to process, experiences to absorb, and changes to navigate in our own time. We don’t have to explain every quiet period of our lives, and we don’t have to rush ourselves into becoming the person we think we should be.
If there’s one thing I’d like to remind myself, and perhaps you, too, it’s that there is no single right way to move through life’s difficult moments. We all have our own experiences, our own ways of coping, and our own pace at which we find our footing again. What matters is allowing ourselves the grace to be where we are, without constantly comparing our progress to where we think we ought to be.
So, if you’ve found yourself being a little quieter lately, perhaps you don’t need to be so hard on yourself. Maybe you’re processing a change, finding your way through a difficult season, or simply taking time to understand what you want from life. You don’t have to have all the answer today. Sometimes, giving yourself permission to pause is enough.
As for me, I’m happy to be writing here again. I don’t know exactly where this next chapter will take me, but I’m looking forward to discovering it one day at a time, sharing my thoughts along the way, and allowing this little corner of the internet to grow and change with me.
Thank you for being here and for taking the time to read my words. It’s lovely to be back. Until next time, take care of yourself, give yourself a little breathing room, and remember that it’s okay to be quiet sometimes. ❤️
