The verb ลอง (lāwng) means ‘to try’ or ‘to attempt’ in a sense of trying something out or giving something a go. It’s used when testing something, experimenting, or experiencing something new – not when you’re making a serious effort, which would be the verb พยายาม (p^há-yāa-yāam). Look at the sentence examples below:

(chǎn jà lāwng t^hām āa-hǎan Thāi wān-née)
I will try making Thai food today.
Literal: I will try do food Thai day-this.

(k^hūn k^hūan lāwng gīn nêe p^hrót mān à-^hròi mâak)
You should try eating this because it is very delicious.
Literal: You should try eat this because it delicious very.

(p^hǒm ^awyàak lāwng rīan p^hāa-sǎa Thāi)
I want to give learning Thai language a go.
Literal: I want to try learn language Thai.

(t^hâa k^hūn mâi lāwng k^hūn gâw mâi rúu wâa mān jà bpēn ^awyàang-rāi)
If you don’t try, you will never know what it will be like. (or, If you don’t try, then you won’t know.)
Literal: If you not try you then not know that it will be how.
